Mites 2019-2020 Season Introduction

Sep. 15 - 2019

Good evening Mites parents,

My name is Nicole Doan, and I am pleased to be the Mites Director again this year.  I wanted to touch base to provide some information about the upcoming 2019-2020 Mites season.

The Mites season will start after Thanksgiving, with ice times on Tuesday from 5:15pm - 6:15pm and Fridays from 5:30pm - 6:30pm.  The first practice is scheduled on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 from 5:15pm - 6:15pm.  I will send a reminder e-mail closer to the start date.  During the first few weeks, players will practice on both days of the week.  Four even house league teams will be determined in November, and once the coaches feel they are ready for games, games will be played on Fridays.  Practices will be on Tuesdays.  Due to ice time scheduling, some of the ice times on Fridays may be cancelled for Stettler Lightning games and/or tournaments.

The Mites teams will host a home tournament towards the end of the season, and each team will also go away for a tournament.  More information regarding the tournaments will be provided at a later date.

For those new to hockey, please ensure that your child has all required equipment, that the equipment has not expired (helmets), and that it fits properly.   This list includes:

  • Helmet with cage combo
  • Neck guard
  • Shoulder pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Jock/Jill
  • Gloves
  • Pants
  • Shin guards
  • Ice hockey skates
  • Ice hockey stick
  • Practice jersey, practice socks
  • Mouthguard is not required for Mites hockey

Parents of new players will have to take the Respect in Sport Parent Course.  It is an online course, and is mandatory through Hockey Alberta. Players whose parents have not completed will not be allowed to step on the ice.  If there are older siblings, and you have taken the course in the 2016-2017 season or later, you do not have to take it again.  However, you must go into your Respect in Sport profile and add your new player.  Please refer to the Respect in Sport site for more information: https://hockeyalbertaparent.respectgroupinc.com/.  Hockey Alberta now requires Respect in Sport for Parents to be re-certified every 4 years.

Stettler Minor Hockey requires a fundraising commitment of eight hours per family.  There is currently an opportunity for families to gain four hours by working at the Rummage Sale, which you should have received e-mails about already.  Additional volunteer opportunities will come available as the season progresses.

If you are at all interested in coaching, please submit your application under the Forms tab of the Stettler Minor Hockey website: http://www.stettlerminorhockey.com/. Success in Mites is directly related to having active and committed coaches.  Ideally, we would like to see at least three coaches per team.  We currently do not have enough coaches to run a good program, so please send in an application as soon as you can.  You will also receive your full eight volunteer hours if you are accepted as a coach and attend at least half of the practices.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions or concerns by email (brooknicole.doan@gmail.com) or phone (403) 741-8690.

Looking forward to a fun season!

Nicole
