Important: Respect in Sport Requirement is Changing

Jun. 01, 2026

Over the past few days Respect in Sport has sent out auto reminders to renew certification for the coming season.

If your Respect in Sport (RIS) has expired, DO NOT renew.

Hockey Alberta has introduced a new mandatory program called The Shift Forward, which is replacing Respect in Sport for both Parents/Guardians and Activity Leaders.

For SMHA registration this season, at least one parent/guardian must have a valid Respect in Sport or The Shift Forward Parent/Guardian certification before they can register their child.

  • If your RIS certification has expired: Complete the new Shift Forward Parent/Guardian course.
  • If your RIS certification is still valid: No action is required at this time. You can continue using your current certification until it expires.

Not sure of your status? Check your Respect in Sport account HERE.
